On August 10-11, 2017, Henry E, library director of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen, China, visited Johns Hopkins.
Henry E spent his visit with Welch’s Library Director, Anne Seymour, department heads and several Informationists.
During the visit, Mr. E received tours of the Welch Medical Library, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and University of Maryland Health Sciences and Human Services Library. He met with Linda Gorman, director of the Harrison Library on the Bayview campus. Additionally, Mr. E had a brief meeting and tour with Winston Tabb, dean of the Sheridan Libraries and Museums, on the Homewood campus.
Earlier this year, a team from Johns Hopkins visited SUSTech, and with his visit, Mr. E returned the favor, arriving with specific goals in regards to developing the medical library planned for SUSTech. Specifically, the aim is to build a world-class research library at SUSTech with a service model that allows for growth and adaptability within the ever-changing landscape of medical research. Mr. E came to seek out Johns Hopkins’ expertise concerning library medical space issues, concerns facing a new medical library facility and recommendations for training programs that would enrich SUSTech’s library staff. Welch Library department heads discussed the development of the library’s collection and advanced technologies available to SUSTech as they move forward.
The visit represents the continuation of an ongoing relationship with SUSTech. Henry E plays a major role in the strategic planning of their library and is pro-actively involved in the design work for a new library building, scheduled for completion by the end of 2019.
